8 & Under (8U) Division Info

Welcome to the 2023-2024 8 & Under (8U) Season!

General Information
The 2023-2024 DCYHA 8U Division is open to boys and girls born in 2015 and 2016.  Younger children may only be moved up into the 8 & Under Division with coach and DCYHA Board of Directors approval provided they have played at least one year in the 6 & Under division, and are invited to do so by the coaches after the first month of practices.  Parents may NOT register children born after 2017 or later for the Mite division preseason.

Registration
To register,   All players must be registered with USA Hockey and the Davis County Youth Hockey Association before they will be allowed on the ice.  This policy is STRICTLY ENFORCED.

Annual Registration Fees
The DCYHA Player Registration fee for the 8U 2023-2024 Season is $265.

The USA Hockey registration fee is required and must be completed prior to completing the DCYHA annual season registration.  The USA Hockey membership registration fee is approximately $56 for the 2023-2024 hockey season.

Team Game Jerseys/Socks
8U players are required to have light (home) and dark (away) jerseys and one pair of game socks.  Jersey's cost $55 each, and socks are $10/pair and sold by DCYHA.  Jerseys and socks are available for purchase during the online registration process.  Please note that the jerseys are made with your child's name and number, and that they need only be replaced when outgrown.

Selection of Teams
After a few practices, the coaches will hold a draft to assign players to teams.  In the 8U Division, teams typically play at the same location on the same day as games are cross-ice.  Special requests for keeping siblings and carpool families together are allowed where possible.

Season
The season starts approximately mid-September or early October,  and typically concludes at the  first week in March.  It consists of approximately 40 hours of total ice time.  The 8 & Under Division players get approximately two hours of ice time per week.  8U players practice most Fridays at 5:40pm and games are on most Saturdays.  The majority of games will be held at the South Davis Recreation Center.  Schedules for both practices and games will be posted on the DCYHA website team page.  Parents are encouraged to link their electronic calendar with the DCYHA calendar and check the site routinely for schedule changes. Team Managers can be contacted via email/phone located on the team webpage.

Team Managers are recruited to assist the coaching staff with the following:  paperwork, signups, parent communication, etc.  The DCYHA Director of Team Managers will provide training throughout the season. Team Managers will be asked to assist the Association with the recruitment of volunteers to help with  fundraisers, the Annual Iron Cup Tournament and the hosting of Association events.

Cross Ice Games
DCYHA adopted the American Development Model (ADM) for its 8 & Under program several years ago.  Under the ADM, 8 & Under Division players are introduced to cross-ice hockey games.  Cross-ice games have been found to be very effective for teaching hockey skills to 8U age players.  The kids also enjoy more puck touches, more passing, more shooting, more goals.  The 8 & Under Division games are played with intermediate or full-sized nets and goalies.

Goalies
DCYHA has adopted USA Hockey's recommendation that players not specialize in the goalie position in the 8 & Under division.  As such, all 8 & Under players will take turns playing goalie.  Every child will see the goalie position at least once during the season.

Tournaments
There may be tournaments throughout the season.  Participation in these additional tournaments is at the discretion of the DCYHA Board of Directors, DCYHA coaches and families. If your child is invited to participate in a tournament and you choose to do so, there will be additional fees due from each participant for these extra tournaments.  Participation is optional.

Coaching
If you are interested in coaching an 8 & Under team, please complete the coaching registration found on the DCYHA website.  Contact the 8 & Under Division Director or the DCYHA Director of Hockey.  All coaches must go through background screening, USA Hockey Safe Sport Training, USA Hockey certification training, have completed the 8U age-specific coaching module, have read and agreed to the USA Hockey and DCYHA Coaches Code of Conduct Agreement and have registered as a Coach with the DCYHA online registration system.  Mite coaches may coach with an expired certification of any level, but the 8U age-specific module and the other requirements noted above must be successfully completed to be eligible to for participation as a DCYHA Coach.
